For the second match City made just one change to their starting line-up - Mike Trought replacing the bench bound Gary Kemp. To add to the intensity of the match the Chippenham side contained four ex-City players - Colin Towler, Mark Harrington, Mark Badman and Martin Paul. Despite playing up the considerable slope in the first half City began strongly. Robinson had to scramble away a dangerous Gosling cross after just three minutes before the City midfielder lifted a free-kick onto the roof of the net a couple of minutes later. With 17 minutes gone City lost striker Jason Eaton with a calf injury and he was replaced by Paul Milsom, entering the action for the first time this season. His first serious involvement saw him slice a pass from Iain Harvey well wide but on the half hour he had a more important impact on the game. Cleverley's ball forward saw Town defender Davies climb all over the big striker and for the second game running City were awarded a penalty. And in similar fashion to his success against Folkstone Gosling sent the keeper the wrong way and City were ahead. However, this was far from the end of incident. A joyful Golsing rushed to celebrate with the massed ranks of City fans behind the goal. Around 20-30 jubilant supporters moved forward to embrace the player and the perimeter wall gave way. The full weight of bodies and wall was on Goslings ankles and it was immediately clear he had sustained a serious injury. While he was carried from the pitch and taken to hospital the game was delayed for 18 minutes as the rubble was removed and the, fortunately uninjured fans, were moved from the area. When the match was restarted City struggled to recapture their control and the interval arrived with little further goalmouth action.

Having lost their most influential player City looked a shadow of the side that they had been in their previous three games, although Jim Rollo should have doubled their lead, heading a Cleverley centre well wide from point-blank range in the 55th minute. Chippenham were little better but with City time and again giving possession away they slowly began to extert some pressure on City's rearguard. Rawlins should have done better when sent clear on 70 minutes and he then just failed to get on the end of a Paul cross that flashed across the face of Mark Bryant's goal. Paul then curled a shot narrowly wide and when Griffen saw an 88th minute shot clip the top of the bar it looked as it City would hold on for a single goal win. However, with five minutes stoppage time already gone this all changed. A harmless ball into the box led to a mix-up between Bryant and Trought and Griffin stabbed it into the net. The celebrations from Chippenham players, fans and officials alike was unrestrained but within a minute the game took another incredible twist. City restarted with resigned air of a side who has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory but the ball found its way out to Andy Williams on the right flank. He made ground before finding Gosling's replacement Gary Horgan who knocked a low cross into the box that keeper Thompson came for but failed to collect. The loose ball fell to Dean Birkby and he fired it into the roof of the net. The joy was now for everyone in the City camp and a moment later the referee's whistle signed the end to a stunning day all round.
